Discussion:
Why have the outtakes never been released?

Unknown Chaplin teased us with a few gems of outtakes from the Chaplin
archives. I know that 400 plus cans survived with outtakes from most if not
all of his Mutal films and later period and I have always wondered why no
distributer ever releases this outtake collection on DVD. I think this
would be a collection to die for.

I think that there's only a few diehards who would want to watch every
single out-take from the Mutuals, as a lot of them are probably almost
exactly the same. I wouldn't mind seeing another collection of
selected out-takes, though.

I also seem to recall hearing or reading somewhere that some of the
out-takes seen in Unknown Chaplin (and most likely others as well)
have perished since their original unearthing.

I'm not sure if these still survive or not, though. Many of the ones
featured in "Unknown Chaplin" came from the Rohauer collection. I've read
that some of them have since been lost, but I'm not sure just how many.

I agree, it would make a fascinating collection. Unfortunately, I suspect
that it could get very difficult to follow the outtakes without some sort of
commentary. That's one of the benefits of "Unknown Chaplin"-James Mason
explains specifically what Chaplin is building upon or altering with each
take.
