I have been to the BFI site, but haven't noticed any updates in a
while (although I could be missing them, that site is confusing for
me). What is the status of the restorations and will they EVER be
coming out on DVD??

I suspect a lot of whether or not they will be released on DVD depends on
whether or not they can find a company willing to release them. I, too, have
been wondering about the status of the restorations. Going through my
Chaplin DVDs the other day, I realized what a blessing David Shepard's
restored Essanay and Mutual comedies have been in re-evaluating this work.
I've tried watching the Keystones very carefully, to pick up on all the gags
and subtle bits of business, but it's so difficult sometimes when the prints
are just so contrasty or clearly edited to shreds. The addition of the
restored Keystones would be hugely beneficial to research, and could add a
whole new appreciation of that early part of Chaplin's career.

I know this is going to sound a little weird, but I liked the
Keystones a lot better when I used to watch them on Super-8.

Don't ask me why. Maybe I was just younger then.

You mean to tell me that either IMAGE, LAUGHSMITH nor KINO are
interested in releasing the first 35 films (well, 34) of the greatest
artist of the 20th Century? They have no idea how much I would be
willing to shell out in order to get a nice set of the restored
Keystones (hopefully with a lot of bonus features and commentaries).

Now waitaminnit. I thought that David Shepard was already planning to
put the restored Chaplin Keystones on DVD. Elaborate, somebody who
knows?
