Hi, it's gotten to the point that about the only thing I watch repeatedly on
DVD is Chaplin. I therefore need to start collecting. Anyone have any
suggestions on which DVD's are the best, i.e. have the best picture, sound,
fidelity to original, extras, etc? Is there one company that makes all the
Chaplin ouvre available, or do you have to go to diff. co's for the
Keystones, Essanays, Mutuals, First nat's, features, etc? Many thanks!

[I am crossposting because I am unsure whether a.m.c is still active or not.

The Image Entertainment restored Chaplin Essanays and Mutuals lovingly
put together by David Shepard are the best of those. He used the best
source material from around the world.

I agree. I really enjoy the Image discs, and they tend to be the most
complete.

Having grown up with the Republics, my one concern is that the Mutuals
seem to be stretch printed, or else played at a slowish rate. Still
excellent.

Work by Eric Lange, David Shepard, and their colleagues continues on a
large set of Chaplin Keystones, so I'd recommend hanging on for a bit
on those. It's likely to be good, with new restorations and scores by
a variety of current musicians, including us. They aren't by any means
pristine -- the Keystone material got pretty beat-up over the years --
but that's a good reason to trust people who really care about these
movies, compare a variety of source material, and get good transfers
at appropriate speeds. It'll the best material that's possible in this
day and age.

OK, thanks a lot.

I noticed on amazon they have a Mutual/Essany 7 disk set, complete. But a
later, Mutuals only set (3 disks) comes with The Gentleman Tramp, which is
kind of hard to find on DVD these days. There are also an Essanay set issued
in several Parts - I didn't see if they were Image disks or not.

I've just gotten the three volume Chaplin Mutuals from Image, the later
release is better apparently.

OK, thanks. I guess I'll get both sets. It will be money very well spent,
and the start of a good chaplin catalogue. [RW rubs his hands together,
deviously].

Do you have any recommendations as to other parts of the catalogue?

I'm all new at this. I visit a library that has an extensive collection
of DVDs from several years ago. I'm still to discover what else there
is. I can make recommendations for the later feature and sound films,
that series seems to be going away now, or is being repackaged.
