OK, we all know what BS these top x lists are. Still it's quite
pleasing to see City Lights acknowledged and listed as the best
romantic comedy of all time.

I wouldn't call it the best romantic comedy of all time because I
don't think it's a romantic comedy.

Offhand I'd say the best romantic comedy of all time is probably "The
Philadelphia Story."

Now if you ask me what the greatest comedy of all time is, then "City
Lights" gets my vote -- with "The General" coming in a close second.

PHILADELPHIA STORY is definitely yaw. Best "screwball"? I'd say
The LADY EVE.

I'd think the best romantic comedy is either Bringing Up Baby......or What's
Up, Doc? Your choice.

Maybe it was both, the only comedy genre category was romantic
comedy.

The list of #1s in AFI's genre categories: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
(Science Fiction), CITY LIGHTS (Romantic Comedy), THE GODFATHER
(Gangster), LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (Epic), RAGING BULL (Sports), THE
SEARCHERS (Western), SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (Animation), TO
KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Courtroom Drama), VERTIGO (Mystery) and THE WIZARD
OF OZ (Fantasy).

I was delighted to see THIEF OF BAGHDAD ('24) at #9 in Fantasy. They
even showed the great scene with Douglas Fairbanks and the "giant"
lizard. :)
I was hoping for more Silent choices though.

Chaplin,s PAY DAY 1922 captures the true picture of American romance
I'm not sure what you mean by this. I've never thought of it as a "romantic"
picture in any sense. Edna Purviance's role feels very much tacked on just
to give her something to do in the film, and certainly the depiction of the
marriage between Chaplin and Phyllis Allen is a complete farce.

"City Lights", on the other hand, is one of the most insightful and moving
films depicting the subject of love and romance, and the lengths to which
Chaplin goes to help the girl, even though he realizes that the restoration
of her sight could end his chances of continuing their relationship, is an
excellent example of how the film beautifully weaves the humor and
heartbreak so skillfully.

I'm afraid I don't understand your assessment of "Pay Day" (one of Chaplin's
most mechanical and least inspired shorts, in my opinion) as somehow
capturing the "true picture of American romance".

_City Lights_ is definitely not a classic romantic comedy.. Its plot
structure is based
on irony, which is rather antithetical to the spirit of romantic
comedy. Unlike _The Kid_,
(which is also not a romantic comedy), _City Lights_ has never been
imitated because
its plot structure is so integral to the film's meaning that it isn't
readily transferrable to other
narratives. The only Chaplin feature that comes close to being a
romantic comedy is
_The Gold Rush_, which is more of a mixed genre film than a pure
romantic comedy.

But if "romantic comedy" is the only form of comedy represented, then
_City Lights_
is definitely #1. ;-)

None of the AFI picks seem bad to me, though I'd choose another
Hitchcock rather than
_Vertigo_.

As for screwball comedies, I'm partial to _My Man Godfrey_, mainly
becuase Powell
and Lombard are such a potent combination, but it's hard to single out
one in such
a strong field.

It might be a bit confusing, what with that initial being the same and
all, but AFI stands for AMERICAN Film Institute, and the list was very
clearly advertized as being "America's 10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic
Genres."

Just think, if you produced your own Australian Film Institute list,
you could suggest a category for the best American film that fits an
Australian's concept of what " best captures the true picture of
American romance" and vote for Pay Day!

For comic, ironic commentary on marriage, nothing beats the comedies of W.C.
Fields and Laurel & Hardy. Have you been able to see any of the silent
Laurel and Hardy shorts yet? Those are well worth it if you can track them
down (I have no idea of the status of Laurel and Hardy on DVD in Australia,
unfortunately).

Glad to hear the Laurel and Hardy films are easily available!

You won't be disappointed with either of the official "W.C. Fields"
collections from Universal. I'd be careful about ordering any of the public
domain DVD versions of his short films, though. Many PD DVDs are watchable,
but I've yet to see any PD DVDs of the Fields shorts that didn't look like
they were projected through a cloudy fishbowl. Absolutely horrendous
quality. Thankfully, Criterion has released splendidly restored versions of
his six short films on a DVD called "W.C. Fields: 6 Short Films", which is
well worth purchasing.

For romantic comedy, "The Philadelphia Story" is definitely very near the
top. I'd also mention a personal favorite (also by George Cukor), "Holiday",
one of the most delightful, sublime character-driven comedies I've yet seen.
