Hi Richard! I cannot believe you posted this as if it were fact. Or
were you joking? Clearly Chaplin's image was photo-shopped onto that
protester's sign over Hitler's face so the author could make his
"humorous" observation. A comment at the bottom shows someone took the
bait. I sure do pine for the days when there was truth in print and
newspapers strived to be the most reliably accurate.

Hi Deborah, how are things in Florida?

Oh hell, I'm still a sucker for photo-shopping. I need to get myself
into the 21st century. I'm afraid "truth" has always been subject to
the whim of journalistic gatekeepers from Hearst to Murdock.

Hi Richard,
Florida is HOT. Well, if you're a sucker for photoshopping, I've got
a "recent" shot of me in a bikini. ;-)  I know about the "gatekeepers'
effect," but somehow it seemed newspapers were more about reporting,
albeit with a slant, than creating or editorializing the news like
they do now. Still, using Chaplin's photo in that shot was pretty
funny.
Where's the rest of the Our Gang? AMC has dried up!
Deborah
The newspaper game hasn't changed much. Remember the picture of
Charlie with his mother? The photoshop of its day, and lots of people
were suckered by it too.

Hello David! Oh yes, you're right, that was a good one. But I do think
the percentages have been inversed over time in newspapers between
gossip and hard news. I remember when the National Enquirer had that
cover shot of Elvis in his coffin. Such a thing was the purview of rag
magazines and not reputable newspapers. Today I believe that same shot
would be on the cover of the NY Times.

I'm still here!

I finally got around to watching SOULS FOR SALE a couple of weeks ago.
Chaplin's appearance wasn't any longer than the little snippet we've
already seen in documentaries. I've heard that this is footage of him
shooting A WOMAN OF PARIS, but I sure doubt it. That wasn't Rollie at
the camera, and it all felt very staged to me. More likely, Chaplin
just did Sam Goldwyn a favor and visited the set for a cameo.

But please, please, someone argue with me about it. This place has
been way too quiet lately. It's the Usenet equivalent of rolling
meadows overtaking the former trenches of WWI France: all very
peaceful, but not very exciting.

Well, do you want to have just one argument, or were you thinking of taking
a course? It's one pound for a five minute argument, but only eight pounds
for a course of ten. ;)
