There is some evidence that Bordeau(x) has a Chaplin connection. I
know nothing about him other than what I've read on IMDB. Can any of
you eagle-eyes out there who are good at facial recognition offer
anything more? Thanks, DT

David:

Are you taking about a connection to Chaplin beyond being in Chaplin's
films? Joe Bordeaux is in many of Chaplin's 1914 Keystones, and I've
seen him in a bit as a Jewish ghetto extra in THE GREAT DICTATOR. In
between that, he appeared in many films up through at least 1940 (but
mostly worked as an assistant director and prop man in Hollywood
(working for Arbuckle--with whom he had a close relationship in the
Teens, Fox Sunshine, Hal Roach, Columbia, Billy West and many other
companies).

Yes, I meant post-Keystone. Sorry, I should have made that more clear.
The info about being a prop man is interesting and maybe significant.
I didn't want to sway responses, but the possible connection I've
heard about relates to Modern Times. Has anyone spotted him there?

Thanks for the info re. Dictator.

Thanks for the info re. Dictator.
The only actor I can spot in the film who resembles Bordeaux is one of the
workers in the shipyard. I'm basing this off of identifying him as the actor
who played the gunman in W.C. Fields' "The Pharmacist" just three years
before "Modern Times".

I haven't watched MODERN TIMES in a while, but I wouldn't be surprised
if Joe made an appearance, or worked on it as a propman. Chaplin
seemed to trust a lot of the people he worked with at Keystone to get
the job done (Chester Conklin and Hank Mann are among those Keystone
alums in MT). Dave "Andy" Anderson was another Keystone vet who worked
as a prop man and assistant director for years (into the early 30's),
and ended up skippering Chaplin's yacht in the 30's.

John Rand is also frequently reported in cast listings of "Modern Times",
alternately as a prisoner, or as a waiter. I haven't been able to definitely
spot him in the film though.

Joe Bordeaux was in a couple of CC Keystones, most notably the stalled driver in
'Getting Acquianted", but was mostly an Arbuckle co-star (he was a cop in "The
Knockout"). However he is in "Great Dictator" as a man in the Ghetto who
clutches a lampost upon hearing Hynkel's speech about the crackdown on the Jews.
Here's a link to that shot:

Using that picture to go on, it's hard to say where he might appear in
"Modern Times".

Here's a screenshot I captured from the DVD of the actor who at least
resembles Bordeaux:

He's the actor to the left of Frank Hagney (who plays the shipyard foreman).

Were you able to identify Joe Bordeaux in the cast of "Modern Times"? It
would be interesting to know what other Keystone regulars turned up in these
films.
