Quote from the Washington Post obituary article:

"Chaplin's image was later tarnished by sex scandals and liberal politics.
He moved to Switzerland with the rights to his movies in a bitter,
self-imposed exile."

I don't see it the way this journalist has condensed and distorted it. The
sex scandal was pretty much trumped up to discredit Chaplin. Similarly, at
the time (1950's) Paul Robeson was confined in the US because the US
government withdrew his passport, while Charles Chaplin remained stuck in
Europe blocked from a return to the US without a re-entry visa. Hardly
self-imposed. It was socialism, and not 'liberal politics,' surely?
